EU Delegation Engages with Pakistan’s Minister to Bolster Bilateral Ties


Islamabad: A European Union delegation, led by Mr. ?erban Dimitrie Sturdza, Chair of the Delegation for Relations with the Countries of South Asia (DSAS), met with Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Law and Justice and Human Rights, Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar, to discuss the enhancement of bilateral relations. This meeting underscored the shared commitments of both parties toward democratic values and human rights, while also reaffirming the strength of their cooperation under the GSP+ framework.



The delegation included notable figures such as Dr. Riina Kionka, EU Ambassador to Pakistan, and Members of the European Parliament Michael McNamara, Ruth Firmenich, Cristina Stanculescu, Songul Dogan, and Liviu Adrian Natea. During the meeting, Minister Tarar expressed appreciation for the EU’s support and emphasized Pakistan’s dedication to aligning its frameworks with international human rights conventions.



Minister Tarar highlighted Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to promote democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law amidst complex challenges. He reiterated the country’s commitment to peace, pluralism, and institutional resilience, noting the active role of democratic institutions in fostering dialogue, tolerance, and constitutional protections.



The Minister also briefed the delegation on plans to establish a National Commission for Minorities through an Act of Parliament. This commission aims to address grievances and monitor rights violations, further strengthening Pakistan’s framework for minority rights protection.



The EU delegation acknowledged Pakistan’s progress in reforms related to justice access, fundamental rights protection, and transparency. The meeting recognized ongoing cooperation under the “Promotion of Human Rights in Pakistan II” project and the outcomes of the 14th Pak-EU Joint Commission as positive indicators of continued engagement.



Both sides expressed their intent to strengthen dialogue mechanisms, including the Joint Commission and the Strategic Engagement Plan, with a focus on trade, investment, and addressing global challenges such as climate change and regional instability. The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of mutual respect and a shared vision for a democratic and equitable global order.
