Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has resolved to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling regarding reserved seats, following deliberations held in Islamabad today.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the ECP has tasked its legal team with pinpointing any obstacles to the ruling’s execution and plans to seek further guidance from the Supreme Court if necessary. The Commission also addressed and dismissed ongoing criticism aimed at the Chief Election Commissioner and other members, labeling calls for their resignation from a political party as baseless. The ECP reiterated its dedication to operating within the legal framework, undeterred by external pressures.
Additionally, the Commission clarified its stance on the intra-party elections of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), resulting in the withdrawal of the “Bat” symbol from PTI due to non-compliance with Article 215 of the Election Act. It was noted that thirty-nine MNAs failed to provide necessary documentation verifying their affiliation with PTI at the time of their nomination, leading to their classification as independent candidates, who subsequently aligned with the Sunni Ittehad Council post-election.
The Supreme Court has also dismissed a related petition filed by the Sunni Ittehad Council, challenging decisions by the Peshawar High Court and the ECP, which did not involve PTI as a party in these legal proceedings.
