ECC Approves Gas Tariff Hike for Industry, Spares Domestic Users

Islamabad: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has approved an increase in the gas tariff for the industrial sector while rejecting a proposed hike for domestic users. The decision follows a detailed review of a proposal from the Petroleum Division, aiming to secure necessary revenues for the upcoming fiscal year.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the ECC authorized a tariff increase for captive power plants from Rs 3000 per mmbtu to Rs 3500 per mmbtu. The committee, led by Federal Minister for Finance Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb, emphasized protecting domestic consumers from added financial strain by maintaining their current rates.

The meeting included key government figures such as Federal Minister for Petroleum Musadik Masood Malik, Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari, and Minister of State for Finance and Revenue Ali Parvez Malik, among others. Despite the approved industrial tariff hike, the ECC directed the Petroleum Division to explore further efficiency measures, including a grid transition levy on captive power plants.
