Islamabad: On World Children’s Day 2024, Dr. Nikhat Shakeel, Member of the National Assembly and Convenor of the Parliamentary Caucus on Child Rights (PCCR), emphasized the need for a concerted effort to address issues affecting children in Pakistan. In her message, she highlighted the importance of providing quality education, healthcare, and protection to children, describing them as the nation’s most valuable asset.
According to National Assembly of Pakistan, Dr. Shakeel urged stakeholders, including government, civil society, and individuals, to unite in promoting and ensuring children’s education, health, and safety. She identified child labor, abuse, and corporal punishment as critical issues that require immediate attention, advocating for their recognition as national emergencies. Dr. Shakeel also stressed the importance of a fair juvenile justice system to uphold the rights and dignity of every child.
Dr. Shakeel called for a reaffirmation of commitment to securing children’s rights in line with the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. She envisioned a Pakistan where corporal punishment and child abuse are eradicated, and juvenile justice is a foundational element of the legal system. By protecting, nurturing, and empowering children, Dr. Shakeel believes they can fulfill their potential and contribute to a brighter future for the country.
