Karachi: Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, Chairman of the Washington-based World Forum for Peace & Justice, has called for the resolution of the Kashmir dispute through tripartite talks involving Pakistan, India, and the genuine Kashmiri leadership. This statement aligns with the recent draft resolution approved by the United Nations Third Committee, emphasizing the right of peoples to self-determination.
According to the Kashmir Media Service, Dr Fai, in his statement in Washington, referenced the UN’s 55th meeting on Friday (November 17), where a draft resolution was approved concerning self-determination. He expressed skepticism about the UN’s ability to fulfill its promises, citing the ongoing situation in Kashmir as an example of the organization’s historical failures in resolving conflicts, particularly in cases like Palestine and Kashmir.
Dr Fai highlighted the criticality of the Kashmir issue, pointing out that the conflict has persisted for 76 years. He raised concerns about the continued presence of a large number of Indian military and paramilitary forces in the region, citing the potential threat of genocide as warned by Dr Gregory Stanton, Chairman of Genocide Watch.
Further, Dr Fai criticized the United Nations Security Council for its inaction and apparent bias towards India, attributing it to India’s significant military, nuclear, and economic status in South Asia. He stressed that India has failed to honor its commitments made at the UN and other international forums regarding the resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
In conclusion, Dr Fai asserted that it is imperative to resolve the Kashmir issue through negotiations involving all key stakeholders — India, Pakistan, and the legitimate representatives of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
