Displaced Manipur Residents Demand Restoration Amidst Ongoing Tribal Violence

Imphal: Residents displaced by recent tribal violence in Manipur held a protest rally in the state capital, Imphal, calling for the government to facilitate their return and restore their homes. The demonstrators, who have been residing in relief camps due to clashes between the Kuki and Meiti tribes, expressed their grievances and demands through a peaceful march.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the conflict in Manipur has resulted in over two hundred deaths and displaced thousands since May of the previous year. During the rally, which started from the Akmapat area relief camp, protestors carried placards demanding resettlement, the withdrawal of Assam Rifles military units from the region, and the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The peaceful procession escalated when protestors attempted to march toward the Chief Minister’s residence and were met by police outside the Accompt Model Girls College. The police response included the use of tear gas and batons, which led to several injuries among protestors, including journalists. This incident has heightened tensions in Imphal, with concerns over the use of force by law enforcement against civilians.
