Islamabad, January 28, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Government of Pakistan acknowledges the critical role of Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) for continued socio-economic development of the country, hence incorporating it in the national development plan, Pakistan Vision 2025. Similarly, in Pakistan’s Strategic Trade Policy Framework, IPR is recognized as a key enabler for export competitiveness, for stimulating growth among SMEs and for the transition of Pakistan from a ‘factor-driven’ to an ‘innovation-driven’ economy.
In light of above, the Danish Embassy in Islamabad launched a project to deliver technical trainings and capacity building workshops to Intellectual Property Organization Pakistan (IPO) through its counterpart, Danish Patent and Trademark Office (DKPTO). The project will also organize a study tour of IPO-Pakistan to Denmark and bring Danish experts to Pakistan in order to support strategically important and relevant development activities towards achievement of SDG 9 (Industry, Innovations and Infrastructure) in Pakistan.
The technical trainings and capacity building workshops will strengthen IPO-Pakistan’s procedures for examination and evaluation of patents, industrial designs and trademarks thereby contributing to more effective management and enforcement of IPR in Pakistan. DKPTO will also streamline IPO-Pakistan’s management and examination procedures according to international best practices and develop capacity of IPO-Pakistan’s technical team, quality assurance measures and applicant services for patents and trademarks.
During the virtual kick-off ceremony H.E. Ms. Lis Rosenholm, Ambassador of Denmark to Pakistan said, “our aim is to provide IPO-Pakistan with such technical assistance that it would be able to manage an effective and transparent intellectual property infrastructure that would allow more knowledge-based companies to invest in Pakistan, thereby fostering job creation and enhancing socio-economic development”. She further added, “Government of Denmark is committed to support Pakistan’s economic prosperity by increasing genuine businesses by smart use of intellectual property.
The relations between Pakistan and Denmark are very friendly and both countries have annual trade of more than $250 million. The Trade Council in the Embassy assists the business community in their endeavour to enhance bilateral trade between both countries”.
Mr. Sune Sorensen, Director General of DKTPO addressed the participants and emphasized that DKPTO strive to cooperate internationally with a long-term goal of develop and streamline IP-practices and operability for IP-users worldwide.
Mr. Sorensen added “As a very tangible example of this commitment, DKPTO is currently implementing a number of international projects, all with the objective to strengthening IPR systems and thereby improving the framework conditions for Danish companies abroad. The possibilities for establishing new IPR authority collaborations in export markets have a natural special relevance – this cooperation with Pakistan is one such possibility.
Ms. Shazia Adnan, Director General, IPO-Pakistan addressing the participants assured that IPO-Pakistan is committed to devote the necessary logistical support and resources for the effective implementation of the project and its sustainability in the best organizational national interest.
