New Delhi, November 08, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Delhi Police have informed a court that it has registered 98 cases under draconian law, Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), since 2005.
The police submitted these details after the Delhi High Court directed it to provide information on the number of UAPA cases in which chargesheet was filed within a period of 90 days and cases where extension was sought. Legal website Bar and Bench reported that the police sought extension of time for filing chargesheet beyond 90 days in 20 cases.
The Delhi Police also said that of the 98 cases registered, 15 were transferred to India’s notorious National Investigation Agency (NIA). Of the remaining 83 cases, the police provided details of 74 cases to the HC as the rest were still unchecked, Bar and Bench reports. As per data, 40 of those cases were decided while 29 are pending trial and 14 are being investigated.
It is to mention here that several Muslim activists, students and human rights defenders including Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider and Gulfisha Khatoon are languishing in jail under the UAPA cases registered by the Delhi Police. Many of these undertrial prisoners are in jail since 2020.
Many international human rights bodies including United Nations Rights Office criticised the Delhi Police for arbitrarily arresting and imprisoning rights defenders.
