Delhi High Court to Review Umar Khalid’s Bail Plea in 2020 Riots Case

New Delhi: The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Delhi Police regarding the bail application of Umar Khalid, who is facing charges under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) for his alleged role in orchestrating the 2020 Delhi Riots.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Girish Kathpaliya of the division bench have set the next hearing date for August 29. Khalid, a former student leader, was detained under the stringent UAPA and other related charges amid accusations of fomenting communal violence during the riots, which resulted in significant loss of life and property.

The legal proceedings have been prolonged, with the police filing multiple chargesheets since the riots occurred. Khalid’s initial bail plea was denied by a trial court, leading him to seek relief from the High Court, which also refused his regular bail on May 28. Special Judge Sameer Bajpai, citing a previous Delhi High Court ruling, found the allegations against Khalid sufficiently serious to merit continued detention under the UAPA.
