Deep Depression in Rann of Kutch to Escalate into Cyclonic Storm, Affects Karachi and Surrounding Regions

Islamabad: A deep depression over the Rann of Kutch in India, currently located approximately 270 kilometers east/southeast of Karachi, is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by tomorrow as it moves into the northeast Arabian Sea. This evolving weather system is poised to bring significant rainfall and storm conditions to Karachi and several districts in Sindh.

According to National Weather Forecasting Centre – Islamabad, the depression has been tracking slowly west-southwest over the last 12 hours. Positioned at Latitude 23.7 N and Longitude 69.5 E, the system is likely to continue its trajectory and emerge along the Sindh coast by late tonight or tomorrow morning. Favorable conditions such as warm sea surface temperatures, low to moderate vertical wind shear, and upper-level divergence are contributing to the potential intensification of the storm.

The impending cyclonic storm is expected to trigger widespread rain and thunderstorms across multiple districts including Tharparker, Badin, Thatta, Sujawal, Hyderabad, T.M Khan, T.A Yar, Matiari, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Jamshoro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, and the Karachi division, persisting until August 31. These areas could experience heavy to extremely heavy rainfall intermittently.

Maritime conditions are also forecasted to be rough to very rough, with squally winds reaching speeds of 50-60 kilometers per hour. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea until the end of August. The PMD’s cyclone warning center in Karachi is closely monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary. Authorities have been urged to stay informed by following PMD advisories.
