Islamabad: Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has stated that once independent members of Parliament decide to join a political party, the decision is irreversible. During a news conference held in Islamabad this evening, he emphasized the constitutional and legislative frameworks that bind the independents’ decisions in the political landscape.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Tarar highlighted specific articles of the Constitution during his address. He pointed out that Articles 51 and 106 mandate that independents must join a political party within three days following the official Gazette publication of the names of the returned candidates. This requirement underscores the structured approach towards maintaining political affiliations post-election.
Additionally, the Law Minister elaborated on recent amendments to the Election Act, specifically Sections 66 and 104(a), which now solidify the constraints on independents. He clarified that independents who have joined the Sunni Ittehad Council are now prohibited from affiliating with any other party. This amendment reflects the Parliament’s authority and capability to revise or establish laws governing electoral processes and party affiliations.
Tarar’s statements indicate a firm legislative stance on the political alignment of independent members, signaling a move towards more stabilized party politics within the country’s parliamentary system.
