Karachi: The third death anniversary of Bilquis Edhi, a prominent philanthropist known for her extensive humanitarian work, is being commemorated today. She passed away in Karachi last year due to cardiovascular disease.

Bilquis Edhi, a nurse by profession, devoted over sixty years to serving those in need. Following the death of her husband, Abdul Sattar Edhi, in 2016, she took the helm of the Edhi Foundation, one of the largest charity organizations in the world.

Under her leadership, the foundation was instrumental in rescuing thousands of unwanted babies. In addition to providing what is considered the largest ambulance service globally, the organization also operates a variety of services, including free nursing homes, orphanages, clinics, women’s shelters, and food kitchens.

For her significant contributions to humanitarian causes, Bilquis Edhi was recognized as the ‘most impactful person’ of the first two decades of this century by Impact Hallmarks. Her accolades include the Hilal-e-Imtiaz, the Lenin Peace Prize, and the Mother Teresa Memorial International Award for Social Justice.

In line with her husband’s legacy, Bilquis Edhi ensured that the institution she nurtured would continue to serve humanity beyond her lifetime.
