Islamabad, Systematic marginalization and discrimination of Dalits and human rights abuses against these people, also considered ‘Untouchable’, have become a norm in Narendra Modi-ruled India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, today, said though Dalits have been victims of Hindu caste system for centuries yet incidents of violence against them at the hands of upper caste Hindus has climbed significantly since Modi became India’s Prime Minister.
The report said Dalits live in constant fear of being publicly humiliated and beaten with impunity by upper caste Hindus seeking to keep them in their place and merely walking through an upper-caste neighborhood is a life-threatening offense for a Dalit in the so-called democratic republic of India.
The report pointed out that recently a young Dalit man, Jitendra Parmar, and several members of his community were brutally attacked by upper caste Thokar community of Hindus for a seemingly innocuous act – entering a garba (folk dance) venue in his village a Mahakali Chowk in Gujarat. The attackers subjected them to caste-based slurs and physical violence solely because they had entered the garba venue.
The report further said Dalits in India are not allowed to drink from those wells or attend those temples that are used by upper caste Hindus. It said Dalits are relegated to lowest jobs in India and are subjected to numerous forms of caste discrimination and brutal violence. It maintained that Dalit women are particularly hard hit and lamented they are frequently paraded naked, beaten and raped by upper caste Hindus.
The report urged human rights activists and organizations to come forward to save Dalits from persecution by upper caste Hindus.
