Custodial Death Sparks Outrage and Protests in Poonch

Srinagar, Following the custodial death of a Kashmiri youth, identified as Ulfat Hussain, in the Surankot area of Poonch district, massive protests erupted. Based on the details, a significant number of protestors, encompassing family, friends, and local residents, demonstrated at Eidgah Ground, Surankot. They expressed their outrage by chanting against the Indian police and occupation authorities, deeming the death of Hussain in police custody as a severe violation. They demanded the immediate arrest of the police officers responsible and the initiation of a formal case against them. Ulfat Hussain reportedly faced torture that resulted in his death a few days ago at Surankot Police Station. The All Parties Hurriyat Conference, in a statement released in Srinagar, strongly censured the death and called for an unbiased inquiry.

According to Kashmir Media Service, In related news, Counter-Intelligence Kashmir unit personnel, accompanied by Indian paramilitary forces, carried out raids on several houses of pro-freedom activists across districts in the Kashmir valley, seizing various electronic items and documents. Amidst these occurrences, local shopkeepers in Srinagar pointed to recent suspicious fires, suggesting that they might be a conspiracy. They claimed masked men, linked with certain factions supported by Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha, set fires to several shops in the city’s Batmaloo shopping complex, aiming to oust local shopkeepers. CCTV footage captured these individuals arriving with petrol cans and starting the fires.

In a separate incident, an Indian Border Security Force Head Constable took his own life in Kupwara after discovering his wife’s suicide in Rajasthan, India. Mental health professionals attribute such tragic incidents among Indian forces, especially in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, to various stressors including prolonged separations from family and challenging working conditions.
