Patna, 15 Oct 2023: India’s recent win over Pakistan in an ICC World Cup cricket match resulted in contrasting reactions in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. The post-match celebrations, originating from the victory at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, led to tensions and subsequent clashes between two community groups.
Kashmir Media Service reports that a group, uplifted by India’s cricketing success, commenced their celebrations by bursting fireworks on the old Gudri Road area. This action did not sit well with another group, sparking confrontations and culminating in a violent clash between them.
Local police forces from Nagar, Mithanpura, Sikandarpur stations, and Superintendent of Police Avadhesh Dikshit intervened, working to quell the disturbances and restore peace. In an attempt to dissipate the tensions that had arisen from the cricket match outcome, peace committee members were called upon. SP Dikshit urged both parties to reach a peaceful resolution. The officers then remained vigilant in the area to prevent any subsequent unrest.
Initial reports indicate that the disagreement was centered around the use of firecrackers during the celebration, with concerns for young children and heart patients being highlighted. The incident has been identified as having communal undertones.
