CPI-M, CPI Leaders Criticize India’s Abstention on UN Gaza Resolution

NEW DELHI, The decision by India to abstain from voting on a United Nations resolution seeking a truce in Gaza has drawn sharp criticism from leaders of the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) and the Communist Party of India (CPI). Both Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of CPI-M, and D Raja, the General Secretary of CPI, expressed their concerns, citing a shift in India’s foreign policy stance.

According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, in a joint statement released in New Delhi, Yechury and Raja expressed disappointment over India’s abstention. They interpreted this move as India aligning its foreign policy more closely with U.S. interests, suggesting a departure from its historical support of the Palestinian cause.

Further emphasizing their point, the leaders highlighted that the resolution, which India chose not to vote on, was passed by a significant majority in the United Nations General Assembly. They noted the intensification of air and ground attacks in Gaza by Israel following the adoption of the resolution. Additionally, they pointed out the communication blackout in Gaza, an area inhabited by approximately 2.2 million Palestinians.
