Guwahati, The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, led by Rahul Gandhi, was met with resistance in Guwahati today, as police prevented the procession from entering the city. The incident led to confrontations between Congress workers and law enforcement, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing political journey across India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the police had set up barricades at two key points to stop the Yatra. This action prompted a strong reaction from Congress workers, who reportedly dismantled the barricades and chanted slogans. The situation escalated when police employed force to control the crowd, following orders from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had previously declared that the Yatra would be barred from entering Guwahati.
Rahul Gandhi addressed his supporters on the outskirts of Guwahati following the clash. During his speech, he affirmed, “We have broken barricades, but will not break the law.” He reiterated that the protest was specifically against Chief Minister Sarma, accusing him of corruption.
Furthermore, Gandhi highlighted a discrepancy in treatment, pointing out that BJP President J.P. Nadda had traveled the same route without hindrance. He expressed his belief in overcoming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam and establishing a Congress-led government.
Despite the tensions and confrontations, the Yatra proceeded along its planned route. Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to remain in Assam until Thursday, continuing his political tour.
