New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has declared the Congress party’s intention to push for a legal guarantee of Minimum Support Prices (MSP) for farmers, alongside allies within the INDIA bloc.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Gandhi’s announcement follows closely on the heels of the presentation of the Indian budget by the Finance Minister. He made this statement after meeting with a delegation of farmer leaders from several Indian states including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu at Parliament House.
During his interactions with the media, Gandhi underscored the necessity of enshrining MSP within a legal framework, noting that it was a key commitment in the Congress party’s manifesto. He stated that this measure would facilitate hassle-free implementation and emphasized the collective effort of the INDIA bloc to pressure the government into passing this legislation.
The Congress manifesto pledges to guarantee MSP as per the recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission, ensuring that payments to farmers for their produce at procurement centers are directly transferred to their bank accounts.
