Congress Leader Calls on Modi Government to Uphold Minority Rights Amid Rising Tensions

Jammu: Amid escalating anti-Muslim tensions in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir and across India, Congress leader Ghulam Ahmad Mir has reiterated the constitutional obligation of governments to protect the rights of minorities.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mir’s remarks were made in response to comments by National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, who expressed concerns that Muslims feel increasingly unsafe under the Modi-led Indian government. Mir emphasized that every government has a constitutional duty to ensure the safety of its citizens, protect national borders, and safeguard the rights of minorities. He underscored that minority rights are constitutionally enshrined and must be universally protected.

Farooq Abdullah, in a statement to reporters, highlighted the growing marginalization of Muslims in India. He urged the government to address these concerns, noting that with 24 crore Muslims in the country, their rights and safety cannot be neglected. Abdullah stressed that the Constitution guarantees equality and non-discrimination based on religion.

His comments were also a response to recent claims by Hindutva groups concerning control over religious sites in India. Abdullah warned of the dangers of undermining constitutional principles, stating that such actions could threaten the nation’s integrity. The statements from both leaders underscore the pressing need for inclusivity and adherence to constitutional values in the face of rising communal tensions.
