Congress Leader Accuses BJP of Coercive Tactics in Kashmir

Srinagar, Vikar Rasool Wani, the President of the Jammu and Kashmir chapter of the Indian National Congress, has criticized the Modi-led government for its alleged misuse of national institutions against opposition parties in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). Wani contends that these actions are designed to undermine the opposition ahead of forthcoming parliamentary elections.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a press conference held at the party’s headquarters in Srinagar, Wani articulated concerns over the coercive measures purportedly employed by New Delhi to dismantle the opposition alliance in the region. His comments specifically referenced recent actions by the Enforcement Directorate against National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, which Wani condemned as politically charged.

Wani highlighted what he perceives as a pattern of the Indian government’s misuse of key institutions, including the Income Tax Department, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), and the Enforcement Directorate, to weaken the INDIA bloc—an alliance of opposition parties. He accused the Modi government of targeting opposition leaders with politically motivated investigations while allies of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) seemingly evade similar scrutiny.

The Congress leader also addressed broader grievances with the BJP’s policies in IIOJK, particularly the abrogation of the region’s special status and the resulting increase in unemployment. Wani emphasized the opposition’s commitment to countering what he views as injustices perpetrated by the BJP, vowing to prevent the party from consolidating power and to maintain the unity of the opposition to reflect the collective will of the people.

Wani’s statements reflect ongoing tensions in IIOJK, highlighting the complex political dynamics and the challenges faced by opposition groups in the lead-up to key electoral contests.
