New Delhi: The Congress has amplified its critique of the BJP-led government in India concerning the ongoing violence in Manipur, calling for the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah and urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit the troubled state.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a press conference held in Delhi, Congress spokesperson Jairam Ramesh criticized the government for its handling of the crisis, describing the administration as a “double-engine government” that has been derailed. Ramesh asserted that the Home Minister bears direct responsibility for the situation, demanding, “We want the Home Minister to resign because it is his responsibility.”

The Congress further insisted that Modi should make a personal visit to Manipur before the next session of Parliament. Ramesh highlighted the prolonged unrest since May 3, 2023, noting that the Prime Minister has been traveling internationally but has not visited Manipur. He emphasized the need for Modi to engage with political leaders, civil society groups, and those affected in relief camps. Additionally, the Congress urged the Prime Minister to meet with an all-party delegation from Manipur and to convene a comprehensive all-party meeting at the national level to address the crisis.

Ramesh also criticized Modi’s approach, accusing him of delegating responsibility for Manipur to Amit Shah, who, alongside Manipur’s Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, has been unable to restore peace. He questioned, “Why has the Home Minister not acted on the CM’s failures, and why has he been attempting to shield him?”

The Congress has set a deadline of November 25, prior to the Parliament session, for the Modi government to implement the requested measures.
