New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, strongly criticized the Modi government’s new Agnipath scheme, which is designed for the recruitment of individuals into the Indian armed forces, claiming it serves political rather than national interests.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Gandhi accused the BJP-led government of using the Agnipath scheme to manipulate the military establishment for its own political benefits. He argued that the program undermines the traditional values and commitments of the Indian Army, presenting it not as a support mechanism but as a strategy laden with ulterior motives.
Gandhi also highlighted the economic implications of the scheme, alleging misdirection of funds intended for soldiers’ pensions towards Adani Defense. This aspect of his critique brought attention to the potential commercialization of the military through partnerships with foreign corporations, which he claimed compromised the scheme’s integrity.
Echoing Gandhi’s disapproval, other Congress leaders have expressed their intent to abolish the Agnipath scheme if they come to power, focusing instead on providing comprehensive economic and social security for military personnel.
The controversy surrounding the Agnipath scheme has intensified debates on military reform and recruitment practices in India, with significant opposition from various political quarters.
