Congress Criticizes Indian Government’s Policies on Jammu and Kashmir and China Relations

New Delhi, The Congress party in India has challenged the effectiveness of the Indian government’s policies regarding the statehood of Jammu and Kashmir and its approach towards China, stating that these strategies have failed to achieve their intended goals.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh highlighted the ongoing militant attacks in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, noting that more than 160 soldiers have lost their lives since August 5, 2019. He pointed out the recent attack on January 12 in Poonch, underscoring the continued threat in the region despite governmental measures.

Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s June 19, 2020 statement, where Modi claimed that no foreign intrusion had occurred on the Indian border, labeling it an insult to the memory of slain soldiers. He argued that this statement has hindered progress in negotiations with China, resulting in the Chinese control of approximately 2000 square kilometers of Indian territory.

The report from the Superintendent of Police of Leh was cited by Ramesh, indicating that Indian forces can no longer access 26 out of 65 patrolling points, areas previously patrolled freely until 2020. He emphasized that strategically crucial locations like Depsang and Demchok remain inaccessible to Indian troops.

Furthermore, Ramesh expressed concern over China’s increasing influence in India’s neighborhood, citing the recent visit of Maldives President Mohammad Moeez to China as the latest example. This visit marks the first time a Maldivian President has made an official visit to China, highlighting China’s expanding regional presence.

The Congress party’s critique reflects growing discontent with the current Indian administration’s handling of critical national security and foreign policy issues.
