New Delhi: The Indian National Congress has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s economic policies, accusing them of fostering a “billionaire raj” and creating greater inequality than the British Raj. This statement comes in light of data showing a surge in the number of billionaires in India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh voiced concerns on X (formerly Twitter) about the stark disparities in wealth distribution under the current government. He noted that in 2023, India added a new billionaire every five days, with Modi’s close associates, including Gautam Adani, significantly benefiting. Adani, now the richest Indian, exemplifies the deepening economic divide, a point underscored by the Congress party as it calls for addressing these growing disparities.
The Hurun report indicates that India’s billionaire count has risen to 334, a sharp increase from the previous year, showcasing the extent of wealth accumulation at the top. The Congress’s critique extends to the Modi administration’s silence on implementing a billionaire tax and its approach to economic reforms, which, they argue, prioritize the affluent at the expense of broader societal welfare.
