Bengaluru, October 08, 2022 (PPI-OT):The police in the Indian state of Karnataka were put on high alert after members of Hinduva groups barged inside historical Mahmud Gawan mosque and madrassa in Bidar and performed puja flaring up communal tensions.
The police claimed that the Hindus who had barged in Mahmud Gawan mosque and madrassa were returning after participation in the Hindu festival Dussehra in Bidar. The mosque and madrassa are considered a heritage site and are looked after by the Archaeological Survey of India. The madrassa was built in 1460 and is considered one of the important monuments in India.
A large number of Hindutva members broke the locks of the mosque and madrassa, raised “Jai Sri Ram” and “Jai Hindu Rashtra” slogans and performed puja in the building, the police claimed. Meanwhile, the Muslim organisations in Bidar have protested against the incident. They have also demanded action against the Hindus involved in the incident warning of agitation. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President and Member of Indian Parliament, Asaduddin Owaisi, condemning the incident said that the Hindu extremists desecrated the historic mosque.
Castigating the Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and Bidar police, he asked how they can allow it to happen. He also pointed out that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was only promoting these activities to demean Muslims.
