Commonwealth Secretary-General to Visit Pakistan for Climate and Youth Initiatives

Islamabad: The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, is scheduled for an official visit to Pakistan from July 28 to August 2, 2024, to discuss key issues including climate change impacts and youth empowerment. The visit, her first to Pakistan, comes at the invitation of the Pakistani government and coincides with the second anniversary of the devastating 2022 floods.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Secretary-General Scotland will engage with top Pakistani leaders, cabinet members, youth leaders, and civil society representatives. Her visit will focus on reaffirming support for Pakistan’s recovery from the catastrophic floods of 2022, which caused extensive damage across the country. She is also expected to visit affected areas to observe the recovery efforts firsthand.

Discussions during her stay will explore opportunities to enhance cooperation in various areas, such as national development, youth empowerment, and trade. With the Commonwealth designating 2023/24 as the “Year of Youth” and Pakistan hosting the Commonwealth Youth Ministers Meeting, the Secretary-General will review the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme and discuss the benefits of Commonwealth membership for young Pakistanis.
