Rawalpindi, The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) of Pakistan, General Syed Asim Munir, during his visit to the United States, emphasized the significance of resolving the Kashmir dispute in line with international law and relevant United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions. This focus was brought forth in his meetings with high-ranking US government and military officials.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) issued a press release detailing the COAS’s engagements. General Munir met with several key US figures, including Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Secretary of Defence (retired) General Llyod J. Austin, Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland, Deputy National Security Adviser Jonathan Finer, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Charles Q. Brown.
The discussions during these meetings encompassed bilateral interests, global and regional security issues, and ongoing conflicts. The press release highlighted a mutual agreement between both sides to continue engagement and explore potential avenues for bilateral collaboration in pursuit of shared interests.
A significant part of the conversations with US defence officials centered around counter-terrorism cooperation and defence collaboration, identified as core areas of cooperation. Both parties expressed their intent to increase interactions and expand the scope of mutually beneficial engagements.
The ISPR noted that General Munir underscored the necessity of understanding each other’s perspectives on regional security issues and developments affecting strategic stability in South Asia. In this context, he particularly stressed the need for a resolution to the Kashmir issue, in compliance with international law and relevant UNSC resolutions.
Additionally, the statement mentioned General Munir’s interaction with the Pakistani overseas community at a reception hosted by the Embassy of Pakistan. He acknowledged the positive contributions of the Pakistani diaspora towards the country’s progress and development.
This visit by the COAS to the United States marks a significant diplomatic effort, particularly in highlighting the Kashmir issue on an international platform and fostering bilateral ties with the US.
