RAWALPINDI, On the occasion of the 78th foundation day of the United Nations, General Syed Asim Munir, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), has highlighted the UN’s long-standing promise pertaining to the resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, General Munir conveyed his best wishes to the global institution, emphasizing Pakistan’s unique contributions under the UN flag in the pursuit of a peaceful and prosperous world. The Army Chief underscored that the international community has a joint obligation to uphold the right of the Kashmiri people to a referendum, a commitment reflected in multiple UN Security Council resolutions, as noted by Bol news.
General Munir elaborated on the dedication of Pakistan’s Armed Forces to the principles set out in the UN charter, emphasizing their relentless efforts to realize the vision of their predecessors for a better world, irrespective of the challenges faced.
Pakistan’s Armed Forces have a storied tradition of partnering with the United Nations in peacekeeping efforts. This collaboration commenced on 30 September 1947 when Pakistan became a part of the UN peacekeeping mission. The country marked a significant milestone in 1969, deploying its inaugural contingent to the UN operations in Congo. Over the years, Pakistan’s involvement has spanned 48 joint missions with the deployment of over 230,000 troops in 29 nations globally. A testament to their dedication, 170 Pakistani soldiers, encompassing 24 officers, have laid down their lives during these UN peacekeeping missions.
