CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif Launches Environmental Protection Force in Punjab

Lahore: In a move aimed at tackling environmental challenges, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif has launched Punjab’s first Environmental Protection Force (EPF). This initiative is part of the newly implemented Climate Resilient Punjab Vision and Action Plan, marking a significant step forward in the province’s environmental policy.

The Chief Minister announced the establishment of a Rs 15 billion environmental endowment fund intended to support startups and businesses focused on eco-friendly solutions. This development positions Punjab as a leader in environmental protection within Pakistan.

On World Environment Day, Sharif emphasized the province’s shift towards environmental consciousness, highlighting the creation of a plastic management cell, which enforces a ban on single-use plastics. Additionally, online registration for plastic manufacturers and sellers has commenced, and an Emission Testing Certification program for vehicles has been introduced to address smog issues.

Sharif also noted the installation of 50 air quality monitoring stations and the involvement of youth through the Climate Leadership and Development Internship Program. A GIS squad leveraging artificial intelligence has been formed to enhance environmental protection efforts.

To combat pollution, four fuel testing labs and 15 water quality monitoring stations are being established. The ‘Chief Minister Green Credit Program’ promotes tree plantation, recycling, and the use of e-bikes. A new Strategic Cell in the Department of Environmental Protection aims to raise public awareness.

Further measures include a dedicated Helpline ‘1317’, the installation of emission control systems in industrial units, and the conversion of brick kilns to zigzag technology. Environmental divisional offices are being expanded, and electric buses are being introduced in Lahore, with plans for 1,100 more across Punjab.

Sharif’s comprehensive plan underscores her administration’s commitment to transforming Punjab’s environmental landscape through innovative policies and community engagement.
