Lahore, 14 Oct 2023: A dedicated ceremony was held at the Central Police Office in remembrance of the seven police martyrs from the 1990 Chiniot incident. The ceremony, organized by Inspector General Police Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar, honoured the police officers who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty. Notably present at the event was Chairman Benazir Income Support Program and Akhuwat Foundation Dr. Amjad Saqib, who served as Assistant Commissioner Chiniot during the incident.
The event recalled the tragic sequence of events where seven officers from Gujarat Police were mistakenly identified as bandits and subsequently martyred by a crowd, based on false rumours, while they were trying to arrest robbers in Chiniot. Those honoured include sub-inspector Muhammad Aslam, head constable Javed, and constables Zafar Iqbal, Muhammad Inayat, Muhammad Yousuf, Abdul Sattar, and Bashir Ahmed.
Among the attendees were the family members of the martyred officers, Maulana Jameel Fakhri, and eyewitnesses of the unfortunate event. Both Dr. Anwar and Dr. Saqib paid their respects, offering flowers, commemorative shields, and gifts to the bereaved families.
Acknowledging the efforts of Dr. Saqib in trying to rescue police personnel during the tragedy, IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar presented him with a shield. Moreover, family members of the martyred officers visited the martyrs’ wall at the CPO.
Dr. Saqib lauded the efforts of IG Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar for ensuring employment to a son of a martyred police officer. Dr. Anwar highlighted the Punjab Police’s ongoing efforts to support the families of martyred and deceased officers. He revealed that the department has already employed 1,352 children of martyrs and officers who passed away during service. Furthermore, he announced plans for the recruitment of an additional 1,400 positions soon.
Other distinguished attendees included DIG IT Ahsan Younis, DIG Establishment Zeeshan Asghar, AIG Admin Amara Athar, DPO Chiniot Abdullah, AIG Welfare Naveed Ajmal, and ASP Syeda Shaherbano.
