Karachi, In a significant move to inspect and improve prison conditions, Chief Secretary Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry, accompanied by Additional Chief Secretary Interior Abid Majeed, conducted a comprehensive visit to Central Jail Peshawar. This visit, part of a broader initiative to enhance the welfare and rehabilitation of inmates, involved detailed inspections and interactions with prisoners to understand their concerns and issues.
According to Directorate General Information and PRs – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the visit included several key officials: IG Jails Usman Mehsud, Additional IG Jails Hamidur Rehman, and Superintendent Jail Wasim Khan. During the visit, the Chief Secretary and Additional Secretary closely examined various parts of the jail. They met with prisoners, inquiring about their problems, and assessed the security arrangements and facilities provided.
A significant aspect of the visit was the focus on Jail Industries, an initiative aimed at imparting skills to the inmates. This program is designed to help prisoners learn useful skills during their incarceration, enabling them to support their families post-release. The Chief Secretary emphasized the importance of such rehabilitation measures.
Furthermore, the delegation was briefed on the implementation of video link facilities in the prison. This technology is intended to facilitate the presentation of prisoners in court without physically transporting them, thereby enhancing security and efficiency.
Another noteworthy aspect of the visit was the inspection of Sarhad Mental Hospital, located within the premises of Central Jail Peshawar. The Chief Secretary directed the immediate relocation of the hospital to its designated place. He lauded the steps taken by the IG Prisons for initiating positive activities and welfare programs for inmates across the province’s prisons.
The visit culminated with the Chief Secretary advocating for heightened attention to cleanliness in jails and ensuring the provision of all necessary facilities to the prisoners. This inspection underscores the provincial government’s commitment to reforming and improving the conditions of prisons, focusing on rehabilitation and welfare of the inmates.
