Chief Minister Sharif Outlines Robust Security Measures for Ashura

Lahore: Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif presided over a special meeting to discuss security and logistical arrangements for the upcoming Muharram-ul-Haram. She emphasized the need for strict adherence to the code of conduct and a zero-tolerance policy for violations.

Sharif directed immediate arrests for those spreading hateful content on social media and ordered a complete ban on banners and wall-chalking throughout the province. She also called for the arrest of individuals violating the drone ban during this period. Provincial leaders and security officials were instructed to personally oversee Muharram arrangements and engage with religious scholars.

The Chief Minister tasked the Safe City Authority with ensuring all surveillance cameras are operational and directed the Special Monitoring Unit to track and report any hateful content. Mock drills for security were ordered, with plans to provide uniform ‘sabeels’ and refreshments for participants in processions. Iron pipes will be installed for security during gatherings.

Sharif also called for measures to protect participants from heat and humidity, including water sprinkling and establishing field hospitals. She emphasized the need for effective traffic management and drainage plans in case of rain.

Further directives included activating systems like Hotel Eye and Travel Eye, and obtaining an anti-drone system. Sharif highlighted the importance of consistent power supply during processions and fixing hazardous infrastructure, such as sewer covers and potholes on procession routes.

Sharif noted the sensitivity of the period in light of regional tensions and stressed the importance of maintaining the government’s service-oriented image. She urged that all stakeholders be involved in decision-making and emphasized public perception of government authority.

Sharif also encouraged public committee activation to maintain high service standards. She recalled previous successes in Eid arrangements and called for even better preparations for Muharram. She underscored the state’s role in promoting unity and eliminating prejudice.

The meeting concluded with a briefing from the Home Secretary, IG Police, and other officials on Muharram preparations.
