Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Leads Historic Tree Plantation Campaign in Punjab


Lahore, In a significant environmental initiative, Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif inaugurated a massive tree plantation campaign in Sheikhupura’s Dargai Gull Forest Park, marking a pivotal moment as the province’s first woman Chief Minister to lead such a drive. The campaign, aligned with International Women’s Day, saw the planting of 12,000 saplings by women and students, underlining a unique blend of environmental conservation and gender empowerment.



According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab, the Chief Minister initiated the campaign by planting a banyan sapling, setting the stage for a broader environmental movement across the province. The event witnessed the participation of Senior Minister Maryam Aurangzeb and approximately 2,000 students and women, contributing to the plantation of 6 lakh saplings province-wide on Women’s Day alone. This effort is part of a larger spring 2024 campaign aiming to plant a total of 1 crore 40 lakh saplings, including extensive plantation along rivers and significant areas to bolster the region’s green cover.



Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized the critical role of tree plantation in combating climate change, noting the significant benefits such as reduction of environmental pollution, smog alleviation, soil erosion prevention, and enhancement of soil fertility. The initiative reflects a profound commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship, underscoring the importance of collective action in facing global challenges.



The ceremony, which also served as a platform to celebrate International Women’s Day, was attended by high-profile personalities including Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb, Member Provincial Assembly Sania Ashiq, the Chief Secretary, and various other officials. The Chief Minister also engaged with participants, including women, students, and scout children, capturing the moment with photographs, further highlighting the inclusive nature of the campaign.



The tree plantation drive by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif not only signifies a landmark effort in environmental conservation but also represents a step forward in empowering women and engaging communities in the pursuit of a greener and more sustainable Punjab.
