“Chief Minister Justice Baqir Aims to Transform Chokundi Cemetery into an Archaeological Park”

Karachi, In a significant move towards preserving cultural heritage, Custodian Chief Minister of Sindh Justice (R) Maqbool Baqer has directed the initiation of efforts to transform the Chokundi cemetery into an archaeological park. During his visit to the historical site, he assessed its condition and instructed the removal of encroachments and illegal constructions in the vicinity. The Chief Minister also proposed organizing a fundraising musical event to support the restoration and preservation efforts.

According to Sindh Chief Minister House, Chief Minister Justice Baqir observed the dilapidated state of the stone-cut graves and tombs, emphasizing the urgent need for restoration. Culture Secretary Aleem Lashari informed him that the administrative control of the cemetery had been transferred to the Sindh government in April 2013 following the 18th amendment to the constitution. The site, which spans over 100 acres, contains tombs of warriors from the Baloch and Jokio families dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. These tombs, noted for their pyramid-like structures and intricate carvings, represent a significant part of Sindh’s cultural history.

Dr. Kaleem Lashari, a renowned archaeologist, highlighted to the Chief Minister the security threats to the cemetery, including theft of ancient artifacts and stones. He also pointed out the issue of illegal burials, a practice that has hindered UNESCO’s recognition of Chokundi as a world cultural heritage site. To address these challenges, the Chief Minister ordered the Karachi Commissioner to eliminate illegal parking near the cemetery and instructed relevant authorities to prevent dumping of waste in the area.

Furthermore, on the suggestion of Dr. Lashari, the Chief Minister directed the commencement of demarcation and measurement work of Chokundi Cemetery to construct a new entrance wall near the main road for better protection. He established a committee, headed by Culture Department Secretary Kaleem Lashari, to propose ways for the “face-lifting” of the cemetery and prepare internal and external archaeological views of the historical site. The Chief Minister’s vision to develop the cemetery as an archaeological park aims to promote local and international visits, enhancing the cultural significance of the site.
