Karachi, Caretaker Sindh Chief Minister Justice Maqbool Baqar has set in motion plans to develop the Chaukhandi Graveyard into an Archaeological Park, aiming to preserve and enhance the historical site. During his visit to assess the condition of the graveyard, he ordered the removal of encroachments and illegal structures around the area and proposed organizing a fundraising musical event to support the restoration efforts.
According to Sindh Chief Minister House, Chaukhandi Graveyard, spanning over 100 acres, is a significant historical site containing tombs of the Baloch and Jokhio families from the 17th and 18th centuries. These tombs, known for their distinctive pyramid-shaped structures and intricate stone carvings depicting human figures and designs, represent a crucial part of the region’s cultural heritage. The site was declared ‘Protected’ by UNESCO and placed on its tentative list in 1993, yet the lack of dated inscriptions on the tombs has made it challenging to assign exact dates to them.
During the visit, Dr. Kaleem Lashari, a leading archaeologist, informed the Chief Minister of the security hazards, including theft of ancient artifacts and illegal burials, which have been a barrier to UNESCO declaring it an International Heritage site. In response, Justice Baqir directed immediate action to address these issues, including removing illegal parking near the main entrance and preventing dumping within the premises.
A committee, led by Secretary Culture Kaleem Lashari, has been formed to suggest ways to rejuvenate the graveyard and develop archaeological landscapes around the site. The Chief Minister’s vision is to transform the graveyard into an Archaeological Park, promoting local and international tours and making it a place of learning and enjoyment for schoolchildren and visitors. He also instructed the horticulture departments of KMC and KDA to initiate tree plantation and develop greenery in consultation with Dr. Lashari, further enhancing the area’s ambiance.
This initiative represents a significant step towards preserving and showcasing Sindh’s rich historical legacy while providing an educational and cultural space for future generations.
