Chief Justice of Pakistan Stresses Judicial Independence in Meetings Following Islamabad High Court Allegations

Islamabad, The Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) engaged in crucial discussions with high-level officials, including the Prime Minister, to address serious allegations raised by six judges of the Islamabad High Court, emphasizing the judiciary’s independence.

According to Supreme Court of Pakistan, the situation unfolded rapidly, starting with a letter from the Islamabad High Court judges to the CJP, leading to a series of meetings involving judicial and governmental figures. These meetings culminated in a dialogue with the Prime Minister, where the CJP asserted the judiciary’s independence and broached the formation of an Inquiry Commission to investigate the allegations.

The discussions began with a detailed meeting at the CJP’s residence, involving the Chief Justice and judges of the Islamabad High Court, and proceeded with consultations with the Attorney-General, the Law Minister, and legal community representatives. This dialogue led to a Full Court session, deliberating on the allegations and deciding on the need for the CJP’s meeting with the Prime Minister.

In the meeting with the Prime Minister, the CJP, alongside the Senior Puisne Judge and the Supreme Court Registrar, highlighted the non-negotiable principle of judicial independence. They proposed establishing an Inquiry Commission under the 2017 Act, led by a retired judge to thoroughly investigate the concerns. The Prime Minister agreed to the proposal, promising to seek Federal Cabinet approval and to support judicial autonomy through various governmental actions.

This series of interactions reflects the judiciary’s proactive stance in preserving its independence and integrity in the face of executive challenges, with ongoing efforts to institutionalize this through formal inquiries and legislative actions.
