Raipur: In a move that has sparked debate, the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government in Chhattisgarh has instructed mosque clerics to obtain approval from the state Waqf Board before delivering Friday sermons.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Waqf Board has issued guidelines requiring mosque administrators to submit their sermon topics for approval. The Board, claiming authority over mosques and shrines, has mandated that clerics include government initiatives in their sermons.
A WhatsApp group has been created for administrators to share sermon details, which officials will review before granting approval. Clerics face potential legal action, including First Information Reports (FIRs), for non-compliance beginning next Friday.
AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi criticized the directive, labeling it unconstitutional and a violation of religious freedom as outlined in Article 25 of the Indian Constitution. He challenged the BJP’s authority to dictate religious practices, arguing it infringes on Muslims’ rights to practice their faith freely.
Legal and religious experts have weighed in, noting the Waqf Board’s mandate traditionally involves managing properties rather than intervening in religious matters.
