Chairman WAPDA Reviews Progress on Mohmand Dam Construction

Mohmand: Chairman WAPDA Engr Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) inspected the ongoing construction of the Mohmand Dam, a key infrastructure project on the River Swat in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, emphasizing the importance of meeting project timelines.

According to Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority, the chairman was briefed on various project sites, including Diversion Tunnels, Powerhouse Excavation, Spillway Concrete Works, and the Main Dam. The visit included discussions on progress with the project’s General Manager, consultants, and contractors.

A review meeting focused on construction aspects such as Upstream and Downstream Coffer Dams and Powerhouse development to ensure timely completion, slated for 2026-27. The dam, noted as the fifth highest concrete-face-rock-fill dam globally and the highest in Pakistan, aims to address water storage, flood control, urban water supply, and electricity generation.

Upon completion, the dam will store 1.29 million acre-feet of water for agriculture, benefiting 18,237 acres of new land and supplementing 160,000 acres of existing irrigation. It also includes a power capacity of 800 MW, delivering 2.86 billion units of electricity annually, alongside providing 300 million gallons of water daily to Peshawar. Project benefits are estimated at Rs. 51.6 billion annually.
