Chairman Senate Gilani Outlines Expansive Linkages with Africa

Islamabad: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, addressing participants at the Pakistan-Africa Friendship Day event, outlined a comprehensive vision for enhancing Pakistan’s links with African nations. The event, attended by diplomats and dignitaries from African countries, underscored Pakistan’s commitment to advancing partnerships in trade, development, and diplomacy.

Chairman Gilani highlighted the historical ties between Pakistan and Africa, emphasizing Pakistan’s support for African nations during their independence struggles. He noted that these bonds have evolved into cooperation in peacebuilding, trade, and people-to-people connectivity.

The “Engage Africa Policy,” according to Gilani, represents a strategic shift in Pakistan’s foreign relations, aiming to position Africa as a key partner in future collaborations. This policy has led to expanded diplomatic missions and increased trade, with exports and imports surpassing USD 5.45 billion in 2023-2024.

Gilani also stressed the importance of South-South Cooperation, advocating for regional collaboration and reduced trade barriers. He invited African parliamentary leaders to engage in platforms like the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference for mutual development and equitable partnerships.

Acknowledging shared challenges such as poverty and climate change, Gilani saw opportunities in Africa’s young population and resources. He expressed Pakistan’s eagerness to expand cooperation in sectors like defense, renewable energy, and agriculture.

Concluding, Gilani reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to parliamentary diplomacy and bilateral relations with Africa. Adviser Ms. Misbah Khar emphasized the Senate’s focus on inter-parliamentary collaboration in key sectors, highlighting the importance of institutional cooperation.

The luncheon was attended by various Pakistani parliamentary leaders and representatives from African countries, marking a significant step in strengthening Pakistan-Africa relations.
