Caretaker Prime Minister Urges Swift Action Against Smuggling, Focuses on Border Trade

Islamabad, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwar ul Haq Kakar has issued directives to relevant departments to intensify their efforts in combating smuggling. In a review meeting held today in Islamabad, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of ending smuggling activities, particularly in border districts under the Afghan Transit Trade Agreement.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the meeting focused on trade issues and strategies to curb smuggling along the border areas. Prime Minister Kakar highlighted the need to provide alternative, dignified employment opportunities in these regions. He proposed the establishment of special economic zones and industries to ensure the social security and independence of the people living in border districts.

The Prime Minister expressed concern over the nationwide impact of smuggling and affirmed the government’s commitment to continue operations for its complete elimination. He emphasized that the Caretaker Government will remain vigilant and proactive in taking measures against smuggling until the end of its term.

Kakar also instructed the National Logistics Cell (NLC) to prioritize the completion of their scanning and checking project at the Chaman border, a critical checkpoint. He stressed the need for not only preventing smuggling but also controlling the demand for smuggled commodities in urban areas.

The Prime Minister advocated for the promotion of legal trade in border areas, emphasizing the necessity of complete documentation. He directed the activation of the Federal Board of Revenue’s track and trace system for effective cargo monitoring, which is crucial for overseeing trade movements and curbing illegal activities.

This meeting reflects the government’s resolve to address the challenges posed by smuggling, focusing on both enforcement and economic development as key strategies.
