Islamabad, Murtaza Solangi, the Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting, asserted that the caretaker government does not have the authority to postpone elections, emphasizing the constitutional role of the Election Commission in setting election dates.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during a PTV programme, Solangi referred to Article 218(3) of the Constitution to underline that the prerogative to set or change the date of elections lies solely with the Election Commission of Pakistan. He emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the Commission in conducting free, fair, and transparent elections across the country.
The Minister acknowledged the presence of certain challenges but stressed that they were not severe enough to justify postponing the elections. Addressing concerns regarding the health of the Secretary of the Election Commission, Solangi urged that this issue should not be politicized.
