TORONTO, Following the assassination of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June, Canadian authorities have alerted Gurmeet Singh Toor, a prominent figure in Khalistan activism and close associate of Nijjar, about a potential threat to his life allegedly stemming from the Indian government.
According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, Canadian intelligence officers visited him in August, shortly after Nijjar’s assassination. They presented him with a written warning suggesting that a foreign government, implied to be India, may target him due to his involvement in Khalistan activism. The notification urged Toor to limit his public appearances and activity.
Further elaborating, Toor expressed that instead of quelling the movement, Nijjar’s assassination has amplified interest in the Khalistan Referendum and the Sikhs For Justice movement. Discussing the threats he’s perceived from individuals identified as Indian agents, Toor made these revelations a day ahead of the Khalistan Referendum vote at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, an event anticipated to draw a large gathering of Canadian Sikhs.
Toor described an urgent visit by Canadian law enforcement to his residence on August 24, 2023, during which he received a warning letter. The letter conveyed apprehensions regarding his safety, pointing to the presence of Indian operatives in Canada. The Indian High Commission to Canada’s personnel, Sanjay Kumar Verma and Manish, were alleged to have connections with individuals intending harm. However, claims against Nijjar being involved in anti-India activities lacked evidence from Indian intelligence agencies. Post-warning, Toor emphasized his increased participation in Khalistan-related events and frequent visits to the Gurdwara.
In a poignant statement, Toor declared, “Indian threats cannot intimidate us. While India may have taken many Sikh lives, such actions only serve as martyrdom for us. Our resolve remains unshaken, and participation in the Khalistan movement grows stronger.”
