Canadian Police Probe India Link in Series of Extortions in Edmonton

Ottawa, Canadian authorities are investigating a series of extortion cases in Edmonton, Alberta, believed to be orchestrated by a suspect in India, targeting the South Asian community.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Edmonton Police have reported an emerging trend where victims receive threatening WhatsApp messages demanding compensation for their safety. The investigation has identified 27 incidents between October and January, including extortion, arson, and drive-by shootings. Inspector Lance Parker of the Edmonton Police stated that local individuals, directed by a suspect in India, are believed to be behind these crimes.

Six young males have been arrested in connection with the arson and firearms offenses. While no injuries from the shootings have been reported, a firefighter was injured in one arson incident, and property damage is estimated at around C$9 million ($6.7 million). The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are handling the cross-border aspect of the investigation, which has gained significance following strained diplomatic relations between India and Canada due to the alleged involvement of Indian government agents in the murder of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in British Columbia last year.
