Canadian MP objects to Indian plan to hold G-20 in IIOJK

Ottawa, December 16, 2022 (PPI-OT):Canada’s New Democratic Party (NDP) Member of Parliament (MP) Heather McPherson has urged its government to boycott the Narendra Modi’s government’s plan of holding G-20 events in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). As India begins its presidency of the G-20, she highlighted India’s discriminatory anti-minority laws, its threats of ethnic cleansing, persecution of minorities and the arrests of journalists and human rights activists in Indian illegally occupied Kashmir and in India.

The growing number of anti-Muslim and Islamophobic hate crimes and those toward minorities including Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Buddhists, women and indigenous peoples is appalling, NDP MP and foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson told media. McPherson was joined at a news conference by representatives of the World Sikh Organization and the National Council of Canadian Muslims, who said the government of Narendra Modi is exposing Hindu Nationalism that puts others at risk.

The NDP referred to a July report by the Canadian Muslims’ Council that listed 14 senior party members the group accuses of hateful rhetoric and decisions that have displaced Muslims or left them subjected to violence. In October, United Nations Special Rapporteur for Minority Rights Fernand de Varennes said at a congressional briefing that “nothing short of an international investigative mechanism – as has been done by the UN Security Council, Human Rights Council for countries such as Syria, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Ethiopia – may be necessary” to reverse the trend of violence against minorities in India.
