Canada Withdraws 41 Diplomats from India Amid Diplomatic Immunity Dispute

Birmingham, Canada’s Foreign Minister, Mélanie Joly, announced the recall of 41 Canadian diplomats from India following the Indian government’s declaration to revoke their diplomatic immunity.

According to a news release by Kashmir Media Service, Joly highlighted that exceptions are in place for 21 diplomats who are to continue their tenure in India. She emphasized that the removal of diplomatic immunity goes against international law. This move comes in the wake of comments made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau last month. Trudeau referred to “credible allegations” implicating Indian involvement in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a prominent 45-year-old Sikh leader. Nijjar was tragically killed by unidentified gunmen in Surrey, near Vancouver, in June.
