Ottawa, September 29, 2022 (PPI-OT):In an updated travel advisory for India, Canada has advised its citizens to exercise a high degree of caution while visiting some states, including Punjab, Gujarat and Rajasthan. The Canadian update comes days after the Indian government advised its citizens to “exercise due caution and remain vigilant” amid sudden spike in “Go Back to India” campaign in the world, especially in the West.
A statement issued by the Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) urged the Indians studying and working abroad to “exercise due caution and remain vigilant” due to “a sharp increase in incidents of hate crimes, sectarian violence and anti-India activities in Canada.” The primary trigger for the advisory was Canada’s defense of the “Khalistan referendum” aimed at turning Punjab under India as Sikh independent homeland.
The updated travel advisory by Canada also advised its citizens to avoid traveling to the Indian states of Assam and Manipur and to the Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir. For the states of Gujarat, Punjab and Rajasthan which border Pakistan, the Canadian government cited the ‘presence of landmines’ to avoid travel.
