Raipur, An explosion of a landmine in the Rengabai forest area of Chhattisgarh state resulted in the death of a Border Security Force (BSF) constable and injuries to two other personnel. The incident took place amid heightened security during the Assembly elections in a region affected by Maoist insurgency.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the deceased BSF constable has been identified as Prakash Chandra Sewal, 36. Sewal was performing polling duties in the Kanker district when he stepped on a landmine, allegedly planted by Maoist insurgents, causing the fatal explosion. Critically injured in the blast, Sewal was immediately transported to Raipur Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The two other members of the polling team who were injured in the blast have been reported to be in stable condition and out of danger. This event underscores the ongoing violence in Chhattisgarh, where Maoist groups have been active for decades, leading to intense security measures during the election period.
The Assembly polls in Chhattisgarh commenced on November 7 and are set to conclude on November 17. These elections are taking place under the vigilance of a substantial number of security force personnel due to the significant Maoist presence in the state, who demand liberation from Indian governance.
In related news, drone footage circulating on social media has shown hundreds of Maoists celebrating after engaging in a gun battle with Indian forces in Gangalur, within the same state. The footage depicts a sizable number of insurgents navigating through the jungle, assisting two individuals who were wounded during the firefight.
