Lucknow, October 13, 2022 (PPI-OT):A Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh secured bail hours after he was convicted in a case related to anti-Muslim riots in Muzaffarnagar city. On Tuesday a court in Muzaffarnagar had awarded an imprisonment of two years to 12 people, including BJP MLA from Khatauli Vikram Saini, after they were convicted for rioting and arson in a case during the 2013 riots in the city. However, Vikram Saini secured bail just two hours after the court verdict.
During the riots, at least 62 people, 42 of them Muslims, were killed while 50,000 were displaced. Saini is a sitting BJP MLA from the Khatauli assembly of Muzaffarnagar district. Akram Akhtar Chaudhary, founder of the Kairana-based Afkar India Foundation, said that granting bail to Saini immediately after the conviction was unfair to those waiting for justice for so long. Afkar India Foundation helped in the rehabilitation of people displaced in the riots.
