BJP govt in Assam admits 51 persons killed, 139 injured in police actions in 13 months 

Guwahati, June 22, 2022 (PPI-OT):The Bharatiya Janata Party government in the Indian state of Assam has admitted that 51 people have been killed and 139 others injured in at least 161 incidents of police action after BJP leader, Himanta Biswa Sarma, took the charge of Chief Minister in May 2021.

The state government said this in an affidavit as sought by the Gauhati High Court. It said that these incidents took place across the state in 13 months. “As per records, there have been 51 numbers of death and 139 numbers of injuries caused due to police action or during police custody since May 2021 till 21.05.2022. These incidents pertain to 31 numbers of districts of the state,” Home and Political Department Joint Secretary Animesh Talukdar said in the affidavit.

“A total of 161 numbers of cases have been registered in 31 districts of Assam with effect from May 2021 to 31.05.2022,” read the affidavit. The court deferred the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) related to the incidents till July 29.
