BISP and ADB Plan Expansion of Social Protection Measures in Islamabad


Islamabad: In a significant move to enhance social safety nets, the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) convened on July 31, 2024, at the BISP Headquarters to discuss the Integrated Social Protection Development Programme. This initiative aims to strengthen the support provided to the most vulnerable segments of Pakistan’s population.



According to Press Information Department, the meeting’s primary focus was on a proposed $300 million technical assistance package from the ADB, designed to enhance various facets of the BISP, including institutional strengthening, skill training, education, and health and nutrition initiatives. These components are essential for improving the social protection framework in Pakistan and ensuring comprehensive support for beneficiaries.



The ADB Fact-Finding Mission, led by Co-Mission Leader and Principal Public Sector Specialist Mr. Laisiasa Tora, alongside other senior ADB officials, provided an in-depth presentation on the programme’s scope and its potential impact. BISP Secretary Amer Ali Ahmad expressed gratitude for ADB’s continued partnership and support, emphasizing the programme’s role in not just providing financial assistance but also in fostering skills development and health support for sustainable beneficiary development.



The discussions also touched upon integrating technical training into the conditional cash transfer framework, highlighting a shared commitment to enhancing the efficacy and reach of social support mechanisms. The meeting concluded with both parties reaffirming their dedication to collaborate closely to ensure the successful implementation of the programme, aiming to uplift the lives of BISP beneficiaries across the nation.
